Stuff Happens

I think I am on a financial role this week. My last couple of podcasts have been about finances and I keep getting more and more people reaching out to me after each podcast. That tells me I am hitting a spot that is really close to people’s heart… their money.
The title of this podcast is Stuff Happens… there use to be a time I would have titled this something slightly different but that was then. I want to talk about having a stuff happens fund. I am going to encourage you to go to your local bank an open up a Murphy’s account.
You’ve heard of Murphy’s Law haven’t you? Murphy’s law is a popular adage in Western culture that broadly states that things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them a chance. “If there’s more than one possible outcome of a job or task, and one of those outcomes will result in disaster or an undesirable consequence, then somebody will do it that way.” It is most often cited as “Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”.

Invest Or Pay Down Debt?

It is quite obvious that people like it when I talk about money. Yesterday, I spoke about earning a 25% or better return on your investments. If you listened, you heard me talk about maxing out your employers match program in your 401k.
Today, I received an interesting question from a listener. He asked if debt elimination was more important than investing. His question centered around wondering if he should pay off his my debts first before investing or should he do both simultaneously?
I have an answer for you but it isn’t an exact science. My answer is, it depends. Recently, I was having this same discussion with my old Navy buddy Sequester McKinney. He was reading a book by David Bock, The Automatic Millionaire. In this book, David recommends that you do both. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the right answer.

I am here recording from my hotel room in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yes, I brought my equipment with me so that I could push out this podcast while traveling on the road. It’s been some time since I’ve talked about money. Today I want to chat with you about your investments and what type of return you are getting each year.
Before we get into that, I want to talk about my financial planner for just a second. If you have been listening to my podcasts for any length of time, you will know that I think the world of my financial planner.
In one of my very first video podcast, I spoke about the importance of building a team of advisors. When you look at the most successful people in the world, they all have a team of advisors. They have financial planners, CPA’s, attorneys, real estate agents, tax advisors, and a host of other specialist who can provide them with information that is critical to their financial wealth.

A few weeks ago, I was chatting it up with my dear friend Jim Stroud. I was explaining to him how I seemed to always be busy. Worst part, it seemed as if I always had trouble telling other people no when they requested of my time. Because of this, I was always on the go and just never seemed to have any down time to just do me. It seems that my heart is just too soft to say no. Jim listened intently and a few days later sent me this article: “The Gentle Art of Saying No“.
